My PostSecret of the week. Every week I choose a postsecret that I found particularly interesting, disturbing or endearing.
This week I had a lot of trouble. On Sunday I saw this secret and had to take a break from looking at the website. I was completely aghast. I was disturbed and saddened and angry. In fact, at the time, I just felt so much that I couldn’t pinpoint what exactly the emotions were.
On Monday I tried again, convinced I had to choose another secret. But none of them struck me in the same way.
So today, I have gone back ready to put this secret, that so sickens me, up on my tumblr. Because that’s the point of this feature - to re-post the most striking secret of the week.
And it does sicken me.
The secret had amassed some replies, which are rarely posted. They read:
——-Email——-Dear Frank,If I had a son and he was at a party, watched a girl drink more than she meant to, saw her pass out, and made the decision to rape her… I would blame him. He would be a rapist.
This one is a great response. The culture of victim blaming in cases such as rape, sexual assault, harassment and stalking is simply not okay. But more than that. It is illogical. The rapist, and the rapist alone, is responsible for a rape. Just as a driver, and the driver alone, is responsible for a hit and run. No other conclusion is logical. There is no amount of behavior that invites rape. No matter where you are, no matter what you wear, no matter how much you drink, no matter how you act. Nothing invites rape. By defination.
But it is so prevalent in our culture. The amount of nights one of my friends have been groped or cornered, in one case followed home, and by and large we just accept it. I wore a short skirt, or I’m dancing, or I made eye contact. And that’s where it starts.
The part of this that was so disgusting to me, however, is that this is written by a parent, about a daughter. This victim blaming does not just exist in papers, or in clubs. It is between family members.
——-Email——-I was raped after attending a frat party freshman year. I hope the daughter of the parent who sent this never goes through that; knowing I wouldn’t have my parents’ support made me never report it.
This message shows the damaging affects of victim-blaming. This rape was not reported. There is a rapist out there who no one even knows about. And this is because of people like the individual that wrote this postcard.
In Britain only 15% of serious sexual offences against people 16 and over are reported to the police, and of the rape offences that are reported, fewer than 6% result in an offender being convicted of this offence, the lowest conviction rate in Europe. [Stats from here].
And this is because, in part, of a fear of being blamed. Or not believed. Or targeted. Or not getting a job. Or not having support. Or being kicked out of your church. Or bring dumped by your partner. Or having your funds cuts of. Or someone hushing it up. Or, God forbid, your parent saying you deserved it.
——-Email——-My sister went to a frat party alone, drank shots on an empty stomach, and passed out on the couch. No one raped her. Someone made her an omelet.
This is a nice ending message. Because as horrible as rape is, it is important to remember that there is good in the world. For every awful excuse for a human being that would blame their own daughter for her rape, there is 5 human beings who will understand, who will support. For every rapist, there is 5 good people who would rather make a girl an omelet. Or so I would like to believe.

I swear sometime I could kill Cody.

But then I remember he’s my best friend..

He’s lucky I love him.

Cause otherwise I would have to literally kill him.
